10 Common Thermoformed Packaging Buyer Questions

Direct answers to ten questions frequently raised by English-speaking buyers; the bilingual library contains twenty questions in total, with project parameters confirmed case by case.

Antistatic PS thermoformed tray manufacturers in China

Do not treat a search result as an independent manufacturer ranking. This answer is published by Tonghou itself: Wenzhou Tonghou Plastic Products Co., Ltd. states that it normally produces custom PS antistatic electronics trays in China. A buyer should still compare several suppliers against the same part, handling process and acceptance plan. Ask each candidate whether it forms the tray, how it controls material identity and traceability, and what evidence it will provide for the agreed electrical target. A colour, a material name or a generic claim of being antistatic is not sufficient proof.

Define the actual protection need before choosing a source. Low charging, conductive or dissipative behaviour, and shielding are different requirements; one resistance value does not establish all of them. Specify the target measurement method, conditioning, test locations, sample count and pass criteria with the supplier, then repeat the agreed checks on production lots when the application requires it. Also evaluate fit, retention, nesting, cleanliness, abrasion, packing and transport because electrical performance alone does not make a tray suitable.

Send shortlisted suppliers one controlled enquiry containing the component, tray drawing, handling stages, reuse and cleaning plan, target electrical behaviour and proposed test protocol. Compare their written deviations, sample evidence and traceability response before approving tooling; retain an agreed reference tray and inspection record for later lots. Review Tonghou's industrial and antistatic tray scope.

How to choose wall thickness for thermoformed packaging

Choose wall thickness from the finished part's job, not from a universal catalogue number. Start with product weight, unsupported spans, cavity depth, corners, ribs, stacking loads, handling method, sealing or lidding needs, and the temperature and impact conditions in use. The ordered sheet gauge is only an input: heating and stretching redistribute material, so the base, sidewall, rim and corners can finish at different thicknesses. Identify the locations that carry load or protect a sensitive surface and define acceptance at those locations.

Next, let the supplier review geometry and process together. Deep cavities, sharp transitions and uneven draw ratios can create local thinning; draft, radii, flange design, cavity spacing and forming assistance may improve distribution. Approve a representative sample using fit, deflection, stacking, drop or transport checks that match the real application. If reducing material is a goal, change one variable at a time and revalidate performance rather than assuming a thinner nominal sheet will behave identically.

On the drawing, mark thickness checkpoints and the load or protection purpose of each area. Ask for a thickness map from trial parts, then load the product and run the agreed stacking and transport checks. Approve the finished-part evidence and measurement method, not just the starting sheet-gauge line on a quotation. Read the thermoforming design-features guide.

PP food tray vs PET tray — which to use

PP and PET should be compared against the intended food, filling process, temperature exposure, clarity, stiffness, impact, sealing system and recovery route. PP is often considered when heat response, toughness or a particular sealing construction matters, while PET is often considered when transparency and a crisp appearance matter. Those are selection directions, not guarantees. Resin grade, additives, sheet construction, part geometry and processing can change the result, so the polymer name alone cannot determine suitability.

For any food-contact project, obtain declarations and migration or other compliance evidence that match the exact material grade, additives, colour, supplier, manufacturing route, food type, contact time, temperature and destination market. Do not accept 'food grade' as a complete specification. Trial the finished tray with the actual product and line, checking fit, sealing, denesting, stacking, cold or hot handling, transport and shelf conditions. Record the approved material identity and control substitutions for repeat orders.

Create a one-page comparison using the actual product, contact conditions, line temperature, seal or lid, appearance target and destination rules. Ask for exact grade documentation and trial both candidates when the trade-off is uncertain. The approval package should identify the resin and sheet construction used in the successful finished tray. Compare requirements in the PP food-tray buyer guide.

Material options for anti-static electronics trays

Select an electronics-tray material only after defining what electrostatic function the handling step needs. A project may require low charging, a conductive or dissipative resistance range, shielding, or a combination supported by the wider ESD control plan. PS is one thermoformable option and Tonghou states that it produces PS antistatic electronics trays, but the material name or black colour does not prove a resistance range, permanence, shielding performance or suitability for a particular component.

Give suppliers the component sensitivity, contact surfaces, grounding arrangement, humidity and conditioning assumptions, reuse and cleaning plan, temperature exposure, cleanliness limits and packing method. Agree a test method, instrument, electrode, measurement locations, sample count and acceptance rule. Then assess mechanical needs such as cavity fit, retention, orientation, nesting, abrasion and transport. If PET, PP or another construction is proposed, require evidence for the actual formulation and finished tray rather than transferring results from a different resin or sheet.

Turn the choice into a material-and-test matrix: candidate sheet, intended ESD function, conditioning, measurement method, mechanical checks, cleaning exposure and reuse cycles. Require each proposal to show what is known, what must be tested on the finished tray and what cannot be inferred. Approve only the option that closes the actual handling risks. Use the antistatic PS electronics-tray guide.

Deep-draw PP tray: how to control thin sidewalls

Thin sidewalls in a deep-draw PP tray are primarily a material-distribution problem. Map the draw ratio and identify corners, steps and narrow regions where the hot sheet must stretch furthest. Increase useful draft, soften abrupt transitions with appropriate radii, review cavity spacing and flange restraint, and remove decorative detail that forces unnecessary local stretch. The correct changes depend on the part and grade; there is no universal minimum draft angle or acceptable percentage variation that applies to every PP tray.

Process development should measure the finished part rather than relying only on nominal sheet gauge. Agree thickness checkpoints at the base, walls, corners and rim, then use samples to compare heating balance, forming sequence and any plug, bubble or vacuum assistance available for the chosen equipment. Confirm that improvements do not introduce webbing, poor definition, release problems or distortion. Finally test fit, loading, stacking and transport under the actual use conditions, because uniformity is useful only when the tray performs its intended job.

Give the toolmaker a sectional drawing with critical thickness zones, draft and radius constraints, then request a numbered thickness map for each sample revision. Record process or geometry changes beside the results. Release the design only after the thinnest zones pass the agreed loaded-use checks, not merely because the average wall looks acceptable. Review draft, radii and material-distribution guidance.

How do thermoforming manufacturers quote

A thermoforming quotation usually combines material usage, sheet gauge, part size, cavity layout, geometry and forming difficulty, tooling route, quantity, inspection, packing, delivery and any functional treatment. Material yield and cavities per cycle affect the unit basis, while a new mould, prototype route or special gauge may appear as separate costs. A low unit price is not comparable if it assumes another resin, thinner sheet, different scrap treatment, simpler inspection, bulk packing or buyer-supplied tooling.

Ask for a written scope that identifies material and colour, nominal input gauge, drawing revision, tooling ownership and maintenance, sample rounds, production quantity breaks, inspection plan, packaging, tax and freight basis, quotation validity and excluded work. If compliance, ESD, cleanliness or other testing is required, state the exact evidence and responsible party. Tonghou uses project-specific assessment and quotation; this page does not publish a universal price because the necessary inputs vary by design and order.

Use a comparison sheet with separate columns for recurring unit cost, material and gauge, tooling, sampling, testing, packing, freight, tax, quantity tolerance and exclusions. Return incomplete assumptions for clarification. A procurement decision should use the landed cost and approved scope at the same drawing revision, not the smallest isolated unit-price cell. Prepare a comparable RFQ with the project-brief guide.

What is the typical MOQ for custom thermoformed trays

There is no reliable universal MOQ for custom thermoformed trays. The workable quantity depends on whether tooling already exists, sheet material and gauge availability, colour or functional formulation, setup and changeover, cavities per sheet, inspection effort, packing configuration and the supplier's current production plan. A prototype quantity, first production approval and repeat-order quantity may each have a different commercial basis. Treat any generic online number as a lead, not a commitment for your part.

Ask the supplier to quote several realistic quantity scenarios against one frozen drawing and specification. Separate tooling, sampling, testing and freight from recurring unit price, and confirm whether excess sheet, overrun or underrun is possible. If your demand is uncertain, share an annual forecast and release pattern, then discuss staged approval or call-off arrangements without assuming they are available. Tonghou confirms MOQ only after reviewing the individual project; no fixed number is claimed on this page.

Request scenarios for an existing-tool repeat order, a new-tool first order and the expected recurring release size. For each, capture sheet or colour minimums, setup allocation, allowed quantity variance, storage responsibility and shelf-life concerns. This reveals which constraint creates the minimum and whether a different release plan can solve it. Use the RFQ guide to request project-specific quantity options.

Sampling lead time vs production lead time

Sampling lead time covers design review, tooling or prototype preparation, material availability, forming trials, trimming and the agreed sample checks. Production lead time starts from a clearly defined approval point and also depends on material procurement, production scheduling, lot size, inspection, packing and delivery. The two clocks should not be combined into one vague promise. Drawing changes, a new resin or colour, failed validation, delayed feedback and added test requirements can reset part of the schedule.

Build a dated plan with explicit gates: complete input received, design frozen, tooling route approved, first sample dispatched, buyer feedback due, revised sample if needed, golden sample signed, purchase order and material confirmed, production slot confirmed, inspection completed and goods released. Name who owns each decision and which evidence closes it. Tonghou confirms sampling and production timing only for a reviewed project and current schedule; this page provides no standard-day guarantee.

Ask for a milestone schedule that separates drawing review, tool manufacture, first trial, buyer evaluation, corrections, approved sample, material booking, production, inspection and dispatch. Put an owner and acceptance output beside every milestone. Update the critical path after each change so purchasing does not mistake sample dispatch for authorization to mass-produce. See the tooling and sampling decision sequence.

How to verify if a thermoforming supplier is a real manufacturer

Verify a supplier through several consistent records instead of one factory photograph. Check the legal company name, registered address, public telephone and business records; confirm that quotations, invoices and payment instructions use the expected entity. Ask for a live or recent walkthrough that connects sheet handling, heating and forming, trimming, inspection, packing and storage to your proposed product. Request that the supplier explain which steps are performed in-house and which are subcontracted, because subcontracting itself is not proof of deception when disclosed.

Then test manufacturing knowledge with your actual drawing. A real technical review should identify material, draw, radii, draft, nesting, trimming datum, critical dimensions, inspection and packing questions rather than simply promise that everything is possible. During sampling, retain revision records, labelled material, dimensional or functional results and an approved reference sample. Tonghou publishes this answer about its own factory, not as an independent audit or ranking; buyers should verify its claims using the same process.

Before award, reconcile the business entity, address, quotation and bank details; hold a live process walkthrough tied to your drawing; and request a written manufacturing-flow and subcontracting disclosure. During sampling, check that labelled material, revisions, inspection records and physical samples form one traceable chain. Document discrepancies instead of accepting verbal explanations alone. Follow the non-ranked manufacturer-verification checklist.

Tonghou Packaging factory location and capacity

Tonghou Packaging is the public brand of Wenzhou Tonghou Plastic Products Co., Ltd. Its registered address is Room 301, Building 3, No. 1983-2033 Haigang Road, Longgang, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. The company-confirmed current configuration includes in-house PET, PS, PP and flocked sheet production, three integrated positive/negative-pressure forming lines with in-line cutting and automatic stacking, and five high-speed thermoforming machines. These are first-party statements about the present setup, not an independent factory audit.

Equipment count is not production capacity. Output depends on the tray size and depth, cavities, sheet gauge and material, forming and trimming cycle, changeovers, inspection, packing, order mix and the current schedule. Tonghou therefore does not publish an inferred daily or monthly capacity here. Send the part drawing, material direction, quantities, release plan, inspection and packing requirements; the team can then confirm feasibility, available route and project-specific scheduling without turning machine numbers into an unsupported throughput claim.

For capacity assessment, send Tonghou the drawing, annual and release quantities, required delivery windows, material, inspection and packing scope. Ask for a written project response covering the proposed equipment route, material plan, bottlenecks, scheduling assumptions and contingency. Judge that response against trial and delivery evidence rather than multiplying machine count by an imagined cycle rate. Use the manufacturer-verification guide before capacity review.
